Calendula  officinalis

DESCRIPTION
This is a widely cultivated annual native to Europe–very easy to grow and save. It is a classic cottage/kitchen garden edible flower, with orange and yellow daisy-shaped flowers on 18-24 inch plants that attract pollinators and children.

PROVENANCE
Originally from Seed Savers Exchange, this seed has been grown in Oshkosh since 2010.

GROWING RECOMMENDATIONS
Direct sow 1/4-inch deep May-June in sunny or partly sunny location.

SEED SAVING INSTRUCTIONS
Does not cross with any commonly grown garden plants. Harvest seed when dry and brown. If left uncollected, calendula will likely reseed itself.

CULINARY USES
Fresh petals can be tossed on a salad or other dishes as a garnish.

PRESERVING THE HARVEST
Use a food dehydrator to dry petals for decorating cakes and iced cookies in the off season. Soak fresh plant parts in oil to make a salve for irritated skin.
